Special Education & Learning Disabilities Resources: A Nationwide
Directory
504 Student
A 504 student is a child who has a recorded physical or mental impairment
that substantially limits one or more major life activities (including
working and learning). This includes those students who are not eligible
for special education and those students who meet the eligibility criteria
under the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA).
IEP (Individualized Education Plan)
IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Act) requires that the school, in
conjunction with the parents and other professionals, develop an IEP for
each student with a learning disability. The IEP will describe the level
at which your child is performing and it will identify specific services
(e.g. remedial work, tutoring, special education classes) or instruction
your child will receive to address his or her specific needs. The IEP and
related special education programs are provided at no cost to families.
Each year, the IEP is revised based on the child's progress.
